What are the mosquito-repelling devices?
Mosquito repellents have become very popular these days and there is a reason for it, mosquitoes have drastically increased in number and people need innovative ways to keep them out. All this has resulted in your benefit as there are so many different devices available to you to choose from.
Zappers
Bug zappers use electricity to kill mosquitoes or any other bug flying around you. They usually come with an attractant to lure mosquitoes toward them and then kill them as soon as they come in contact with the grid.
Zone Mosquito Repeller
Zone mosquito repellers are portable devices that can be set up anywhere and they run on batteries. This device gets heated and gives out odor or smoke that keeps out mosquitoes within a certain area.
Mosquito Repellent System
Mosquito repellent systems are more of a permanent kind of system that requires a good setup but they can cover a large zone. They usually operate on refills but sometimes they can also be of zappers or zone repellers.
What are the mosquito repellent sprays?
Some materials in this world have the natural property of repelling mosquitoes. Sprays are made by mixing oil of these materials with water. This liquid when sprayed gives out this aroma that keeps out mosquitoes.
Which is better? Devices or Sprays?
A question may arise often in your mind, which one is better, mosquito repelling devices or mosquito repelling sprays. Both are good in some areas while lacking in others.

Camper’s Guide To Repelling Mosquitoes
As a camper, you can use different techniques to keep out mosquitoes. There are oils you can make natural sprays of, you can light campfire and close tent door and use mosquito nets, etc.
Even while choosing the location of your campsite, you can use some tips to avoid too many mosquitoes like looking for a place far from the water body and wearing dark clothes, etc.

Buyer’s Guide – Best Mosquito Repellent Devices For Camping
Here’s a thorough guide to walk you through all necessary points to consider before buying a mosquito repellent device for your next camp:

Portability
If you are going to camp, you definitely will be going someplace nice and for that, you will have to carry all the luggage. Now the tents and the food baskets will make up most of your luggage. So, you will need a device that can be easily portable and can be carried around with the other stuff.
Lightweight
It is an added advantage if the means you are carrying for repelling mosquitoes is light in weight. This will enable you to carry it in your backpack or even by hand. Too heavy mosquito repellents are generally ignored by campers.
Effective
Most camping sites are susceptible to a large number of mosquitoes. Now to have a pleasant camping trip, you have to make sure that whatever you are carrying to repel or kill mosquitoes has to be effective on a large scale of mosquito flocks.
Odor
It sometimes occurs with campers that the mosquito repeller works effectively to keep mosquitoes out for the night, but later they realize that the foul odor of their repeller has become the reason for keeping them awake. This situation has to be kept in mind and you have to check if the mosquito repeller device is giving out any kind of foul smell.
Buyer’s Guide – Best Mosquito Repellent Sprays For Camping
Let us now look at features to look at in a mosquito repellent spray:

Nature
The nature of a mosquito repellent spray should be checked first. If a chemical is dangerous to handle, it can result in some accidents if enough care is not taken. It is also good if it is safe for children, plants, and pets.
Portability
To go camping, you need to carry your repellent spray with you. For that to be the case though, the spray has to be light in weight and easily packable or the more preferable can be kept in a pocket.
Spray Bottle
Some bottle of repellent comes in jars which have to be prepared and poured in a spray while some come in a spray bottle, to begin with. We prefer the latter but it can be overlooked if you have a spray bottle in your possession.
Eco-friendly
If you want to care for the environment, you can look if the spray is made up of eco-friendly chemicals that have no adverse effect on the surroundings and plants. With the recent focus on the environmental factor, this has become even more important.
Odorless
Who wants to stay awake because of a foul smell? Suppose you don’t like the smell of lemon and your repellent smells just like lemons, that would just be a nightmare. So, you need to make sure that the odor of your repellent agrees with you.
Cost-effective
Repellent sprays are a cheaper alternative to repellent devices, so naturally, you need to ensure that the spray is cost effective. You need to look if for the quantity you are getting the right price. Buy a cheaper alternative and enjoy a good camp within your budget.
Best Mosquito Repellent Devices – In-Depth Review

1. Broan-NuTone HVK400 Backyard Mosquito Repellent System Kit

Key Features
- 4 repellent cartridges
- 65 feet of low-voltage wire
- 3-year limited warranty
- Need Electric Power Source
- Comes with a Step by the step installation guide
- protects areas up to 12-ft in diameter
Technical Specifications
Area | 12 ft dia |
Weight | 13.82 pound |
Limit | 216 hours |
Our Opinion
Broan-NuTone HVK400 Backyard Mosquito Repellent System Kit is one of the best options available currently in the market for mosquito-free camping. This system contained 4 cartridges, 65 feet wire, a controller, and refills.
The setup was quite convenient for us, no very difficult but not very easy. You can set up the 4 cartridges in 4 corners of your tent and connect them by the wire. The wire is meant to be dug underground but since you need it temporarily, you can keep it above the ground. Now you can load the diffuser jar and switch on the control unit. You will need an electric source which is kind of a problem if you are going somewhere with no access to electricity.
The protection it provided us with was very good, it covered a wide area and the longer we used it the more effective it became. You can use it for 200 hours nonstop by filling the diffuser jars once.
A few problems associated with it were that we had to set it up a bit further than the tent. There is the risk of getting affected by the repellent if you inhale too much of it. Also, the assembly had a lot of parts that had to be carried.
But overall, if you want a bug free camp, Broan-NuTone HVK400 Backyard Mosquito Repellent System Kit will surely be satisfactory for you.
What We Like
- Very Effective
- Can go for a long time
- Easy setup
- Comes with a warranty
What We Don’t Like
- The electric power source is a must
- Portability may be an issue
- Setup needs to be away from the tent

Key Features
- No Spray mosquito repellent
- 110 sq ft protection
- Rechargeable
- Goes 6. 5 hours per charge
- Compact design

- Two types of refill available, 12 hours and 40 hours
Technical Specifications
Area | 110 sq ft |
Limit per charge | 6.5 hours |
Our Opinion
If you want value for money with your mosquito repellent, you should look no further than Radius Zone Mosquito Repeller from Thermacell. We found the design was very elegant and simple. It was compact and it can be carried around anywhere very easily.
You just have to put in the refill inside the repellent and switch it on. The device gets heated up and the repellent is diffused to the environment. The chemicals are very safe to be around and the device is rechargeable. It says that it works 6. 5 hours per recharge but in actuality, it lasted around 6 hours after some time.
It is also available at a minimal cost. The only drawback that we can think of is if you are going somewhere where constant recharging is not possible, this may cause some problems.
But overall, Radius Zone Mosquito Repeller from Thermacell was a very good value for a mosquito repellent device.
What We Like
- Easily Portable
- Affordable
- Elegant design
- Rechargeable
- Very safe from chemicals
What We Don’t Like

Key Features
- 15 ft protection
- Odorless and noiseless
- Lightweight
- Portable
- Accessory Mounting System
Technical Specifications
Area | 15 ft |
Limit per cartridge | 12 hours |
Our Opinion
Thermacell MR450 Armored Portable Mosquito Repellent is the best customer rated mosquito repellent for a reason. You can easily take it around with you to camp and enjoy a mosquito-free environment.
You have to put a mat containing the repellent inside the device and switching it on makes the repellent diffuse into the environment. You have to change the mat once it turns white. You also need to put the fuel cartridge for the heating of the device so that the repellent diffuses.
You will need two 2A batteries for the device to run. The repellent however has a considerably small area of protection and its effectiveness, though good is not the best.
However, if you want a good mosquito repellent device that can be easily set up anywhere, you can buy the Thermacell MR450 Armored Portable Mosquito Repellent.
What We Like
- Easily Portable

Our Opinion
BLACK+DECKER Outdoor Mosquito Repellent Device is one of the best electronic mosquito repellents. It can easily fit into the decor of the tent. It looked very elegant and was portable at the same time.
You can just simply hang it outside or inside at a high position and it will automatically attract bugs, kill them, and collect in the container. It uses UV light for luring and an electric grid for zapping, so there is no odor. We found that there was no unnecessary noise from this device.
The bottom tray comes off easily and hence you can clean the device easily. The bulb is replaceable but we didn’t have to replace it for as long as we used it.
The only thing that bothered us a little was that it had to be plugged in at all times. But other than that, it was very effective and elegant. So, you can surely check out the BLACK+DECKER Outdoor Mosquito Repellent Device.

Similar to the previous zapper on the list, it has an elegant design and can fit into any decor. For camping purposes, we can say it is very light in weight and can be easily carried around.
It can be hung anywhere and the UV light will attract flies, the fan will suck them in and the glue trap will hold them before killing them and collecting in the container.
All you have to do is clean the container every day and it can even last a long time. Just like the previous one on the list, it needs to be plugged in for work. So, if you are looking for mosquito traps for camping, you can look at KATCHY Indoor Insect Trap.

HEMIUA Pro Bug Zapper Mosquito Killer is the best bug repellent for RV. It has a nice design to it and it works on all types of insects. It covered a big area and if you want to go to a camp, it can be very effective. It can be used anywhere because the body is waterproof but you should still keep it away from water.
There has to be placed a repellent mat and a fuel cartridge. Simply switch it on and it will start attracting mosquitoes.
You can hang it in a tent and you can sleep comfortably. There were no fouls smell or noise. The mosquitoes got attracted to the UV light and got killed as soon as it touched the grid.
Turning off the light and keeping this device in a corner for a while killing all the mosquitoes inside the tent. One thing is that the grid needs to be carefully handled.
So, overall HEMIUA Pro Bug Zapper Mosquito Killer is worth checking out.

Best Range for a Mosquito Repellent Device
Key Features
- 15 x 15 ft protection zone
- Lantern design with a shield
- Scent-free
- Durable, light, and portable
- Has 1 fuel Cartridge and 3 insect repellent mats
- Weighs 12. 2 ounces
Technical Specifications
Area | 15 x 15 ft |
Weight | 12.2 ounces |
Our Opinion
Thermacell Bristol Mosquito Repellent Lantern is a good option for repelling mosquitoes in camping. We used it at a campsite where there was a huge number of mosquitoes and it worked quite effectively.
The device didn’t produce any scent and the setup was very easy. Its weight was also light enough. The lantern design was elegant and can be used when children were around.
It operated on three batteries and you have to use mats as a repellent. Place the mat in the device and insert the fuel cartridge. Switching it on starts up heating and diffusing the repellent into the environment. The quality of the material wasn’t top grade and it also took around 10-15 minutes to heat up and start. But overall, Thermacell Bristol Mosquito Repellent Lantern provided a good mosquito free camping experience.
What We Like
- Lightweight
- Portable
- Lantern design
- Used when children are around
- Effective in repelling bugs
What We Don’t Like
- Took quite some time to start up
- The material wasn’t very high quality
8. FENUN Mosquito Traps
Most Portable Mosquito Repellent Device
Key Features
- Weighs 1. 55 pounds
- Portable Design
- Comes with 10 glue boards
- Has 7 wavelength for smart catching
- 5 W low power consumption
- Easy to clean
Technical Specifications
Area | 70 sq ft |
Weight | 1.55 pounds |
Our Opinion
FENUN Mosquito Traps are the best bet for a portable Mosquito repellent. The design was very commendable and it was quite easy to setup. It was very effective in killing bugs and the bottom container is also detachable.
Just like all bug zappers, this one has to be plugged in all the time but this one doesn’t consume much power. The zapper had the option of changing between 7 different wavelengths but honestly, you cannot feel the difference. 10 glue boards were quite nice and considering one was effective enough for quite some time, this is a good option and at the price the device came in, it was good value.
One thing we can say is that the feature of 7 wavelengths was unnecessary for us and the material was also susceptible to damage.
What We Like
- Easy to setup
- Cleaning is easy
- Comes with 10 glue boards
- Power-efficient
- Killed a lot of mosquitoes
What We Don’t Like
- Quality of material
9. Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repellent
Most Effective Mosquito Repellent Device
Key Features
- 15 ft area protection
- 12-hour protection
- Scent-free
- Easy to use
- Stylish and portable
- Weighs 9. 6 ounces
Technical Specifications
Area | 15 ft |
Weight | 9.6 ounces |
Our Opinion
Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repellent is a very good option for repelling mosquitoes in camping. We found that the device protected quite a large area. The elegant and compact design made it easily portable.
The device was easy to use and was very simple to set up. You can place the mat, insert the fuel, which is a butane cartridge that needs to be screwed to the device, and then rotates the base 2 to 3 times to switch it on and hang it anywhere you want. So, anyone can operate this device. Also, it worked for 12 hours but you can use refills that have a larger capacity.
The flaws of this device are that you cannot keep food near it or have pets around, especially cats. But the large area of protection usually covers it up. So, you can surely look at Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repellent for your next camping trip.
What We Like
- A large area of protection
- Beautiful design

10. Livin’ Well Bug Zapper
Best Bug Zapper With Light For Camping
Key Features
- 20000 sq foot protection range
- 2000 V grid
- 20W UV bug light
- 4.39 pounds weight
- work with 110-120 V AC power supply
- light and portable
Technical Specifications
Area | 20000 sq ft |
Weight | 4.39 pounds |
Our Opinion
Livin’ Well Bug Zapper is a very powerful bug zapper. It killed wasps, mosquitoes, moths, or practically any insects that can fly. The UV light was very bright and it is always favorable for attracting mosquitoes. The design is in a lantern pattern and the bulb was replaceable.
The box had a 6 ft cable with it and it is very necessary for campers who would want to hang it upwards. The electric grid system meant that there was no issue of chemicals or baby proofing. However, we still advise you to keep it hanging high. It made a slight noise when killing bugs.
From a camper’s point of view, the zapper was light and portable and can be very effective in any condition.
One issue with this zapper was that there was no tray for collecting killed bugs and unlike some other bugs there were no glue traps. But if you care for sound sleep without disturbance, you can get your hands on Livin’ Well Bug Zapper
What We Like
- Very light
- Very effective
- Portable
- UV light was bright
- Killed all types of bugs
What We Don’t Like
- No tray for collecting bugs
- Mosquito killing noise may bother some people
11. TBI Pro Bug Zapper
Most Powerful Bug Zapper For Camping
Key Features
- 4000 V zapper grid
- Waterproof
- Lantern design
- Nature friendly
- 2100 sq ft coverage
- 20W high-intensity UV light
- 4 ft cord
- Weight-10. 6 ounces
Technical Specifications
Area | 2100 sq ft |
Weight | 10.6 ounces |
Our Opinion
TBI Pro Bug Zapper has the strongest grid among all bug zappers in the market. It is also one of the best mosquito repellent device for camping. The 4000 V zapper was effective as well because even the bees got zapped in this grid.
The handle had a ring-type holder for hanging it and the UV light was bright enough to attract mosquitoes. The 4 ft cord was shorter than other zappers have with them, but as per our camping experience, it was long enough. You can also place it flat on the bottom, but a high voltage grid means you have to be careful around it. The material was good and it is waterproof.
No chemical issue because it runs on electricity and it covered quite a large distance as well. As far as durability goes, it was very durable and it came with a brush for cleaning. You just need to remember that you do not touch the grid immediately after turning it off as it may lead to electrocution.
An issue that we faced was that the bottom tray where you need to place the attractant and clean of the bugs, was quite tight and the design could have been better there. Other than that, TBI Pro Bug Zapper was very good overall.
What We Like
- Very effective
- A large area of protection
- Easily portable
- Waterproof and good quality material
- Light is very bright
What We Don’t Like
- Short cord length
- Bad designing of the bottom tray.
Best Mosquito Repellent Sprays – In-Depth Review

1. Colton’s Naturals – Mosquito Repellent
Best Overall Mosquito Repellent Spray
Key Features
- 100% natural
- formulated from garlic juice and cedarwood oil
- One gallon lasts 2-4 weeks
- Good customer satisfaction
- The weight of the product is 7. 26 pounds
Technical Specifications
Lasting | 2-4 weeks |
Weight | 7.26 pounds |
Our Opinion
Colton’s Naturals – Mosquito Repellent is the best mosquito repellent spray for camping because of its effectiveness. The repellent was easy to apply and since it was 100% natural it is safe to use.
We used 4 ounces per gallon at first and sprayed around but it was not very effective but when we doubled it to 8 ounces per gallon, it became very effective and the mosquitoes stayed out.
Mosquito repellent sprays do not require electricity and so it can be carried anywhere. There was almost no smell with only a hint of garlic smell coming sometimes. There was also no issue of noise with repellent spray.
An issue with this is that if there are light rainstorms, the repellent needs to be sprayed all over. Also, the chemical can be dangerous to humans, so it needs to be handled carefully and kept away from children.
Overall, Colton’s Naturals – Mosquito Repellent is a very good option for places with no electricity.
What We Like
- Easy to apply
- Safe and natural
- Easily portable for camping
- Do not require electricity
What We Don’t Like
- Rainstorms wear off the effect
- Dangerous and need to be handled carefully
2. REPEL Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent
Best Value Mosquito Repelling Spray
Key Features
- Available in 3 different types
- Made with oil of lemon Eucalyptus
- Not greasy or sticky
- Can last for several years
- Weight of 6.4 ounces
- Portable
Technical Specifications
Lasting | 6 hours |
Weight | 6.4 ounces |
Our Opinion
As a camper or even as the general public, the REPEL Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent is a powerful solution to mosquitoes. It comes in three different packs, single piece, pack of 2, and a pack of 6 but the pack of 2 is a cost-effective option. We knew that lemon eucalyptus is a good mosquito repellent, so we went ahead and tested this product and we can say it was quite effective. The pack of 2 had 4 ounces of repellent and they lasted for a long time.
The spraying was easy and the container is designed to support that. The sprayed areas didn’t have a greasy or sticky feeling which was good for our camping.
However, if you don’t like the smell of lemons, you surely don’t want this product. It didn’t give a chemical smell and for us the lemon smell was elegant.
You still had to keep it away from children and avoid spraying on children. But with no issue of electricity, REPEL Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent certainly justifies its good customer rating.
What We Like
- Non-sticky
- Easily portable
- Cheap and value for money
- Easy to spray
- No electricity required
What We Don’t Like
- The strong smell of lemon
- Handling has to be done very carefully

- Can be applied to clothing
- Odorless after drying
- Made by permethrin
- Protection up to 6 weeks
- No stain on clothes
Technical Specifications
Lasting | 6 weeks |
Weight | 24 oz |
Our Opinion
Sawyer Insect Repellent is the best-rated mosquito repellent spray in the market and also the most popular one. It certainly justifies the rating because it is very cheap and very useful for camping.
It comes in a spray bottle from which spraying is very easy. The liquid is made of permethrin, which is used here in the US and Canady for treating uniforms. So, this liquid can also be sprayed over clothes or tents and the effect is remarkable.
The protection lasts for 4-5 weeks unless the cloth is washed rigorously. It also, had no stains on the clothes on which it was applied. One bottle contains 24 ounces of repellent which is good enough for completely spraying 5 pieces of clothing for 6 weeks.
All we can say is, the best-rated mosquito repellent spray, Sawyer Insect Repellent is an option you can check out.

Eco-Friendly Mosquito Repellent Spray
Key Features
- Made of Cedar Oil
- Very long-lasting
- Safe for pets and plants
- Treats 10000 sq feet
- No chemicals involved, so eco-friendly
Technical Specifications
Area | 10000 sq ft |
Weight | 1.94 pounds |
Our Opinion
Wondercide – EcoTreat Outdoor Pest Control Spray Concentrate is a good mosquito repellent and it also serves the purpose of being eco-friendly. It was made of cedar oil which by itself is a good mosquito repellent.
You have to apply it twice within the 10 days but if you stay longer, you can get rid of mosquitoes from your camp completely, i.e, maintenance requirement is low. The 16-ounce bottle can cover 10000 square feet which is quite a large area. The repellent was safe for pets like cats and dong and plants as well. The smell was minimal and with no electricity required, it is a good option.
The bottle didn’t have a spray in it so that was a problem. But other than this, the Wondercide – EcoTreat Outdoor Pest Control Spray Concentrate was very useful for camping.
What We Like
- Portable
- Long-lasting
- Ecofriendly and no dangerous chemicals

- Safe for pets and children
What We Don’t Like
- The bottle is not well designed
