Points To Consider While Choosing Best Camping Beds for Bad Backs

Materials
What is more suitable for you, springs, or memory foam? There are options that you should browse through and research before you buy a mattress for your camping needs.
The material of the camping cot will help you get better sleep.
If you are not comfortable o the bed, how can you expect to be able to sleep properly and wake up without sore spots all over your body?
Size and weight
If you are tall or an active sleeper, you know the importance of a large bed. It’s ok to have a mattress that is a few sizes big than one that is a few sizes small.
However, since you are going camping, decide first what size bed would be perfect for you. You don’t want to be lugging around extra weight.
Buy a mattress that is not too big, not small at all for you to be able to sleep properly.
Back Support
This is not something we can decide for you. It depends on what kind of mattress you feel comfortable with.
Doctors however recommend not to sleep on a too firm or too soft mattress.
If it is too firm camping mattress, it will not conform to your body shape, leaving you cranky in the morning because you have to stretch to relieve the muscles that would surely be hurting. And if you already have a bad back, that might not be the best choice.
Now if you choose a squish and fluffy mattress, it means it will conform to your shape but will not support you which is a very important requirement for good sleep.
Durability
If you are paying an amount for something, you want it to last for some time. These mattresses are important for your health during camping trips, so you might pay a large sum to get the best product.
However, if it is not durable, then, it might just be a waste. So, read the instructions and check the warranty.
Buy a mattress that will last long (R-value) and provide you the support you expect from it for a long time.
Comfort and Thickness
While looking for a mattress, look at its thickness and think of two things: will you be able to carry the mattress into the wilderness with you and will you be comfortable while sleeping on it?
If the answer to both the questions is yes, then tick that checkbox from your buying guide and move on to the next instruction.
Affordability
Don’t cut costs where your health is concerned especially if you have a bad back. But expensive is not always good.
First, look at the qualities of the product and then see if you can afford it. If it is somewhere near your budget, great. If not, you can save for some time and get that mattress that you know was made for you.
If you can find the best camping mattress for bad back in a lower price range, then that’s even better. And this will take time, patience, and lots of research.
Portable
This is one of the basic features that you need to look for when you are buying anything for camping purposes. Camping mats for the bad back are no different.
If it is inflatable and can be folded into something compact and has a light air pump, if it is required, or if it is not inflatable, see if it is light and can be rolled in a smaller size for you to be able to carry it with you to your camping sites.
Cooling Ability
While we sleep, the body temperature falls. And this is important for proper sleep and for giving the back some much-needed rest and support.
All the companies these days claim that their mattress gives a cooling effect.
But you need to do thorough research of the kind of material is used and the type work that’s been done on it to find out if the claim is true or not.
Home Trial
Lying down on the mattress for a few minutes at the store may sell you on the idea of buying a mattress.
You may, however, end up hating it because it did not do what it promised and now your bad back is giving you more problems. So how do you escape that?
A company that has confidence in its product will give long home trial periods and longer warranties. So read the description carefully before you choose best camping mattress for a bad back.
11 Best Camping Beds for Bed Back – In-Depth Review

1. SoundAsleep Dream Series Air Mattress
Best Overall Camping Bed for Bad Backs
Key Features
- Comfort Coil Technology
- Extra thick and durable waterproof flocked top
- Multilayer 15 Gauge puncture-resistant material
- Patented EZ pump type: electric
- Sure-grip bottom
- Carry bag included
- Warranty: One year
Technical Specifications
Dimensions | 17 x 13 x 7 inches |
Weight | 18.92 pounds |
Max Weight | 500 Pounds |
Our Opinion
It is one of the most comfortable camping beds that we had the pleasure of using while camping.
Since it’s an air mattress and it does say it is puncture-resistant, but that does not mean that you put it on top of sharp-edged stones or roots of a tree. Unless you deliberately set out to puncture it or if you forgot to clean the ground on which you are putting the mattress, you should not be worried about it getting deflated.
With an air mattress, you can adjust the firmness that you prefer. If you like a firm mattress, you can top it up for a few seconds and you will be good to go.
The air-pump works fast and within a few minutes, the mattress is ready to be slept on. However, you would require an outlet to plug in the cord of the electric pump. If that is easily available, then it is a great camping mattress for the ones who have trouble sleeping at night because of their back.
If you tend to fall off the bed, then this bed will be great for you because it has raised sides that prevent such incidences. The bed is highly supportive and if at any time you feel like the bed is deflating, you can just do a top-up using the air pump.
The height of the mattress is also great, so it feels like you are sleeping on a normal bed and not a temporary one, making it easy for you to climb in and out of it without having to bend your legs.
What made us choose it?
The soft and comfortable mattress provides enough back support for a good night sleep while camping.
What We Like
- Keeps its shape over time
- Perfect back support
- Not too firm, not squishy
- Setup is quick, easy, and fairly quiet
- The raised sides
- Height of the mattress
What We Don’t Like
- The cord for the built-in pump is short
- The repair kit is subpar

Our Opinion
If you have a bad back, then you not only need support but warmth while you sleep. Cold can increase the pain that you are suffering from. The Klymit Insulated Static V is a great sleeping pad that provides warmth and great back support.
It can be easily folded into a compact size and is quite portable. If you are more into backpacking, then this will be a great addition to your kit.
The air can be filled up in 10-15 breaths which means you don’t have to carry an electronic air pump unless you want to.
The surface is not smooth, so it takes a little time to adjust to sleeping on the sleeping pad, but once you get used to it, it will be your preferred choice.
It is durable, comfortable, warm, and lightweight. The added width prevents you from falling off when you are asleep.
What made us choose it?

- Static V pad can be inflated with just 10 – 15 breaths
- An easy-to-use push valve allows for quick deflation

Technical Specifications
Dimensions | 80 x 60 x 13 inches |
Weight | 17.9 pounds |
Our Opinion
It’s a very comfortable piece and one of the best camping mattresses for bad backs that we tried as it lets you choose the firmness as per your requirement by adjusting the pressure.
The mattress is easy to set up and compact once it is deflated. Deflation takes some time, so you can start the deflation process and then start packing other things to utilize your time instead of waiting for it to get done.
The inflation part is easy as you have to only turn on the switch and it does the work by itself. It is quite affordable and worth what you are paying for it.
The indented sides prevent the sheets from slipping and the top surface is very soft in case you don’t want to use a sheet.
The thick material is a great feature as it prevents it from accidental punctures. But you have to be careful that there are no sharp objects beneath it. It provides enough support without causing pressure points.
The sleeping surface is firm but there’s just enough give for shoulders and hips. Since the air pressure can be adjusted, it works as per your need.
Since the bedding is a little heavy and the carry bag is not of that great quality, you might need to make for yourself a durable carry bag for it.
What made us choose it?
It is firm yet supports the body to provide good posture, can be inflated using rechargeable or manual air pump.

- Under quilt is necessary to keep warm
- A little on the heavy side

Technical Specifications

Our Opinion
We think King Koil Airbeds were designed with bad backs in mind. The mattress provides the support you need after a long day at camp. The air-filled coils and internal layering support the body while keeping the spine aligned as you sleep.
The mattress is made of high-quality PVC which is puncture-resistant, durable, waterproof, and fully flocked on both sides with soft velvet material.
It is easy to inflate and deflate using the built-in pump and there are 2 separate valves for inflation and deflation. The deflation takes a little more time compared to inflation, so you can get your things packed while the mat is deflating.
It is not very heavy, making it suitable for you to carry along to your camping trips. This airbed is worth the money which is frankly not much for what you are getting in return.
The height is perfect as you do not have to bend too much to sit on it. You don’t even have to worry about carrying a pillow as it comes with an in-built air pillow. A great investment as far as we are concerned.

Technical Specifications

Weight | 14.5 OZ |
Our Opinion
The mattress has enough thickness to support your back while you sleep so that when you wake up, it’s without the usual backache. Sleepingo Camping pad is durable and waterproof and so it is meant to be used outdoors.
The insulated pad gives you enough space to stretch properly during the night without your legs hanging out. It provides you with enough warmth that during light cold at night, all you need is a sheet to cover you and nothing else. It is cozy and comfortable.
However, if possible, keep the kids from jumping all over the pad as it cannot handle more than the suggested weight. So, jumping means extra pressure which might harm the mattress.
It s a great addition for you if you are a backpacker as it folds down into a compact size and comes with a durable carry bag.
There are sleeping mattresses that let you sleep either on back or stomach; while this mattress lets you sleep on your sides as well without folding like a burrito around you.

Not everyone is fond of air mattresses. And if you are one of those who don’t feel like an air mattress would provide enough support to your back, then this is one of the choices you could consider.

If it were a little broader it would have been great for people who like to sleep in a spread out eagle shape or with their legs folded.
The mat is very made up of durable material, is waterproof, lightweight, and quite comfortable with easy portability as it packs small. It is a great choice for a backpacker as it can be stuffed into your bag where it won’t even take too much space.
It prevents you from sleeping on the ground and hurting your back more. It provides support to your back by molding around you as a cocoon and spine alignment is perfect, meaning you would not be required to keep a pillow beneath your back for good posture.

Our Opinion
Wilpo is super comfortable and lets you sleep through the night without experiencing unwanted cramps. The affordable mattress is quite convenient to carry when rolled up like a bundle.
It is not meant for backpackers but if you travel in your van, the mattress can be easily stowed in minimum space as it includes a simple-to-roll-up strap and clip, an unfastened trip bag.
It is waterproof so a little moisture through the night would not dampen your experience. We preferred to situate the mattress on a low gradient slope as it didn’t feel like it would hold through the night and not slip.
The best thing about memory foam is that it can be used on rocky terrains as it is resilient and there is no fear of the mattress getting punctured accidentally. It provides comfort and warmth throughout the night without disrupting your sleep posture.

Our Opinion
It is easy to set up and takes not more than 10 minutes as it inflates/deflates with the help of an air pump. It is durable and waterproof as it is made from extra-thick PVC. It is easy to clean and survives a moist night without any issues.
It is portable and easy to store as it packs into a small bundle after deflation and can be kept in a bag that it comes with. It is necessary to clean your mattresses after every trip, you can do so with a wet cloth and mild detergent. Then, allow to air dry.
It is thick and high after it has been inflated making it great for back support through the night or whenever you feel like taking a nap.
The rechargeable pump can cause a little inconvenience as it discharges after 2-3 refills. So you need to make sure of an outlet to recharge the pump in case you are going out for more than a weekend if you are not fond of the manual air pump it comes with.

The best thing however was that you don’t need to carry extra equipment to inflate the bed. All you have to do is remove the valve and let it inflate itself.
If you want the sleeping pad to be a little more firm, give it a few breaths and you are good to go. It provides the needed insulation and protects you from ground moisture with its waterproof material.
